One dead, another hospitalized after pickup trucks collide on Midlands road, cops say

One person was killed and another hospitalized after two pickup trucks collided on a Midlands road Sunday.

The collision happened at about 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of McCords Ferry Road and Lone Star Road in Calhoun County, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s about 40 miles south of Columbia.

A 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer hauling a boat was heading down Lone Star Road when the driver ran a stop sign and smashed into the passenger side of a 2001 Ford F250 that was pulling a trailer on McCords Ferry Road, Tidwell said.

The Ford flipped over and caught on fire, according to Tidwell.

The driver of the Chevy died at the scene, while the Ford driver was taken to a Prisma Health hospital in Richland County, Tidwell said. There were no other occupants in the pickup trucks, according to Tidwell.

The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the Chevy driver after notifying relatives.

Further information on the condition of the Ford driver was not available.

Tidwell said both drivers were wearing seat belts. The wreck remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

Through Friday, 500 people have died on South Carolina roads this year, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
