Wreck blocks traffic on interstate running through Richland County during commute

Drivers making the Thursday morning commute were stuck in a traffic jam after a crash shut down a section of a highway running through Richland County.

All of the northbound lanes on Interstate 77 were blocked following a collision that happened at about 8:30 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

The wreck happened at Exit 24, according to the tweet. That’s in Blythewood, and is the junction with U.S. 21 (Wilson Boulevard) — less than 10 miles from the Fairfield County line.

Information on injuries was not available, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

There was no word on what caused the wreck, or the number of vehicles involved.

Vehicles were backed up for miles as emergency responders worked to clear the scene, traffic cameras showed.

About an hour after the crash, traffic began to flow through the section of I-77 as the lanes were reopened, SCDOT tweeted.
