Busy downtown street closed because of cut gas line, Columbia Fire Department says
A normally busy road in downtown Columbia was closed to traffic after a natural gas line was cut in the area.
The stretch of Huger Street from Gervais to Pendleton streets was blocked off by the Columbia Police Department Thursday afternoon. That’s the 1100 block of Huger, in the area between the Publix Super Market and the State Credit Union branch.
At about 12:30 p.m., the road was closed to traffic in both directions, the fire department said. Drivers were asked to avoid the area near the Gervais Street bridge and find alternative routes.
The natural gas line was cut when it was hit by a construction crew digging in the area, fire department spokesman Mike DeSumma told The State.
As of 1 p.m., no evacuations have been issued, and no injuries were reported, DeSumma said.
There was no word on how long it will take to fix the gas line and reopen the road, but Dominion Energy employees are on the scene to help with the repairs, DeSumma said.
Police officers are also assisting the fire department.
