Highway leaving downtown Columbia will close for roadwork

One of the busiest roads heading out of downtown Columbia will be closed for roadwork, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said Monday.

More than a mile of Interstate 126 will be blocked to all westbound traffic in order to perform maintenance on the highway, SCDOT said in a news release.

The highway will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the release.

I-126 will be shut down from downtown Columbia to Greystone Boulevard and the exit for Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, according to the release. That’s about a two-mile stretch of highway.

SCDOT said there will be no access to I-126 from Huger Street and Elmwood Avenue for drivers leaving the city and heading toward Malfunction Junction and Lexington County.

This is the most recent of several overnight roadwork projects by SCDOT in the area.

Last week an exit at Malfunction Junction, connecting Interstate 26 and Interstate 20, was closed. That happened shortly after lanes were closed from mile marker 60 to 70 on I-20 as part of a pavement preservation project.

Drivers traveling near or through work zones are asked to use caution and be aware of equipment and crews, in order to “Let ‘em Work. Let ‘em Live,” SCDOT said.
