Pedestrian dies in Columbia hospital hours after being hit by vehicle, coroner says

A South Carolina man died at a Columbia hospital hours after he was hit by a car on a Midlands-area road, the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.

Marvin Rhames died at Prisma Health Richland just before 4 a.m., Coroner Bucky Mock said in a news release. The 54-year-old Manning man died from multiple blunt force trauma in what the coroner called an accident.

Rhames, a pedestrian, was hit by a vehicle, according to the coroner’s office.

The collision occurred on Silver Road, near U.S. 15 (Summerton Highway), Mock said. The Manning road is about 60 miles east of Columbia.

Rhames was walking south on Silver Road when he was hit by a 2005 Mazda heading in the same direction, said Cpl. Matt Southern of South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The coroner’s office said the driver who hit Rhames remained at the scene after the collision.

The driver was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt in the collision, according to Southern. No other injuries were reported.

Information on possible criminal charges was not available, but the crash is being investigated by Highway Patrol.

Through Tuesday morning, 578 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2020 — and 90 were pedestrians — according to the Department of Public Safety. This is the fifth fatal collision in Clarendon County this year, DPS data shows.
