Crash blocks all traffic on highway heading toward Columbia during morning commute

A highway heading to Columbia came to a complete stop following a collision Tuesday morning.

All of the southbound lanes on Interstate 77 were blocked after the crash that happened at about 7:30 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

The wreck brought drivers heading through Richland County on the morning commute to a halt near Exit 24, according to the tweet. That’s the junction with U.S. 21/Wilson Boulevard in Blythewood.

No injuries were reported in the collision, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information on what caused the crash, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.

Vehicles were backed up for miles as emergency responders worked to clear I-77, traffic cameras showed.

By 8:30 a.m., traffic was flowing through the area as emergency vehicles and disabled cars had been moved off I-77 to the right and left shoulders of the highway, SCDOT cameras showed.
