Driver killed in overnight wreck on Lexington County road identified by coroner
One person was killed in a Saturday night crash on a Lexington County road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The driver of a 2000 Ford Mustang died at the scene after running off U.S. 321/Southbound Road, Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said.
The driver was identified as Antonio Demond Robinson, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8:30 p.m. near the intersection with Lewis Rast Road, according to Tidwell. That’s near Sandhills Elementary School in the Gaston area, just north of Swansea.
The Mustang was heading north on U.S. 321 toward Columbia when it ran off the right side of the road and smashed into a utility pole, Tidwell said.
Robinson was the only person in the car, according to Tidwell. The 37-year-old from Norway, South Carolina was not wearing a seat belt and died after suffering multiple traumatic injuries, Fisher said.
Information on what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.
This was the 24th person killed in a Lexington County crash in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Through Friday afternoon, 614 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2020, DPS reported. Of those, 417 of the victims had access to seat belts, but 225 were not wearing them, according to DPS.
