Pedestrian killed trying to cross busy Lexington County Road, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed Thursday morning in a collision on a busy Lexington County road, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

A pedestrian died after being hit by an SUV that was heading north on U.S. 1/Augusta Road, near the intersection with Ermine Road, Master Trooper David Jones said. That’s near the U.S. 1 Metro Flea Market.

The pedestrian was trying to walk across the road when the crash with a 2004 Jeep Patriot happened, Jones said.

The pedestrian died at the scene, and will be publicly identified by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office after the next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the SUV was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, according to Jones. No other injuries were reported.

Weather was not a factor in the collision, Jones said. The crash remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.

Through Thursday morning, 685 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those, 111 were pedestrians, DPS data shows.

Two people were killed hours earlier in Richland County while walking away from one crash when they were hit by an SUV on Interstate 26.

This was the 25th person killed in a Lexington County crash in 2020, and the second pedestrian, according to DPS.
