I-77 closure, detours planned for this weekend postponed for USC football, DOT says.

Commuters on Interstate 77 in the Columbia area can rejoice for a little while.

A plan to close a section of I-77 so that a bridge could be demolished was postponed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. The closure and detours were supposed to happen from Friday to Sunday.

The plan was put-off “after reviewing potential traffic impacts from the University of South Carolina home football game,” the department said in a statement. The demolition will be scheduled for a later date that’s yet to be determined.

The original plan was to demolish the old SC 277 northbound bridge over I-77 near Farrow Road.

A new SC 277 bridge was finished in mid-September and is open to traffic.
