Coroner identifies 20-year-old pedestrian killed in collision on Midlands-area road

A person walking on a Midlands-area road was killed early Sunday when the pedestrian was hit by a pickup truck, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at about 2 a.m. on S.C. Highway 213, near Fairview Church Road, Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said. The Winnsboro-area road is about 30 miles north of Columbia.

The pedestrian was walking in the road when they were hit by a 2019 Dodge pickup truck that was heading west on S.C. 213, according to Bolt.

Jaylan Hamilton was identified as the pedestrian, according to Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill.

The 20-year-old from Mt. Holly, North Carolina was taken to a Prisma Health hospital in Richland County where he died, according to the coroner.

The driver and a passenger in the truck were wearing seat belts and were not hurt in the wreck, according to Bolt.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word from Highway Patrol on the street lighting in that area, but Bolt said Hamilton was not wearing reflective clothing.

Information on possible criminal charges was not available, but the collision is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Monday afternoon, 734 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those, 120 were pedestrians, DPS data shows.

Hamilton was the 11th person killed in a Fairfield County crash in 2020, and the second pedestrian this month, according to DPS.
