Injuries caused in crash that blocks commuters on highway headed to Columbia

Drivers making the Monday morning commute on a highway heading to Columbia were stuck in traffic following a crash that caused injuries.

The collision on Interstate 20 happened at about 6 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

All of the eastbound lanes were blocked near Exit 11, according to the tweet. That’s in Graniteville, and caused delays for drivers heading toward the Midlands from Georgia and the CSRA.

Injuries were reported in the wreck, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information on the number of people hurt, and their conditions, was not available.

There was no word on what caused the collision, or the amount of vehicles involved. It’s not known if weather was a factor in the crash, but Master Trooper David Jones of South Carolina Highway Patrol urged drivers to take caution because of heavy fog.

“It’s extremely foggy in some areas of the Midlands this morning. Slow down and limit your distractions as you head out this AM,” Jones tweeted.

Seven more collisions were reported by DPS in Richland and Lexington counties since 6:15 a.m., including at least two where injuries occurred.

Information on when I-20 will be cleared was not available.
