Lexington County woman killed in crash that shut down major road during rush hour
Part of Mineral Springs Road in the town of Lexington was under an “extended road closure” during rush hour Tuesday while officers investigated a deadly collision, according to the police department.
Wanda Williams Nichols was killed in the crash, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher. The 64-year-old West Columbia resident died at the scene, Fisher said.
The wreck happened near the 2600 block of Mineral Springs Road, according to the Lexington Police Department.
Nichols was wearing a seat belt when she was driving a car that collided with another vehicle, Fisher said.
The driver of the other vehicle was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Fisher. Further information on that driver’s condition was not available.
There was no word on what caused the collision, but it continues to be investigated by police.
The road was closed from Old Carrington Parkway to Shoal Creek Drive. Officers said they were on the scene minutes after 4 p.m. with paramedics and other emergency personnel.
“Local traffic can access residences up to Old Carrington Parkway from Sunset Boulevard,” the department said. “Local traffic can access residences up to Shoal Creek Drive from Mineral Springs Road at the traffic circle at Cromer Road.”
Schools were informed of the closure so buses could take detours, police said.
It was after 9:30 p.m. when police reported all lanes on Mineral Springs Road had been reopened.
