Motorist dies after driving off I-95 in SC, overturning in water in Orangeburg County

A driver was killed late Friday night in a single-car collision on Interstate 95 in Orangeburg County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

A 2012 Nissan Altima was heading south on I-95 at about 11:30 p.m., when it traveled off the left side of the road shortly before the Interstate 26 interchange and overturned in water, Master Trooper Brian Lee said.

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was killed, Lee said. The Orangeburg County coroner has not yet released the driver’s identity.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

There have been 868 traffic fatalities in South Carolina this year, including 36 in Orangeburg County, according to Department of Public Safety data.
