Motorcyclist, passenger die in I-26 crash in Newberry County

Two people were killed Saturday in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 26 in Newberry County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The driver and passenger of a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle were involved in a three-vehicle collision shortly after noon while traveling east on I-26 about three miles north of Newberry, Corporal Joe Hovis said.

The motorcycle was attempting to change lanes to avoid slower traffic when it struck the passenger side of a 2009 Chevrolet SUV, Hovis said. The impact knocked the motorcycle back into its original lane, where it was hit by a 2006 Toyota minivan, he said.

Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the bike, Hovis said. Neither were wearing helmets.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger died at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia. Their identities have not yet been released.

No one else was injured in the crash.
