Head-on crash with tractor trailer kills SUV driver, SC Highway Patrol says
An SUV driver was killed Sunday after crashing head-on into a tractor trailer, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 4 a.m. on a section of S.C. 121 running through Edgefield County, according to Master Trooper David Jones. That’s near the Midlands area.
A 2007 Ford Edge was heading south when it crossed the center line and hit the 2022 Peterbilt truck traveling in the opposite direction, Jones said.
The SUV driver, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, according to Jones.
The Edgefield County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.
The semi driver also wore a seat belt and was not hurt, Jones said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word on what caused the SUV to swerve into oncoming traffic, but the collision is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Friday afternoon, 930 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, state Department of Public Safety data shows.
At least three people have been killed in Edgefield County crashes in 2021, DPS reported.
