Driver killed, passenger injured overnight after car crashes into tree, SC cops say
One person was killed and another was injured in an overnight car crash on a road just outside of the Midlands area, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11:20 p.m., on a stretch of S.C. 23 running through Edgefield County, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway. That’s near the Johnston area, and Strom Thurmond High School.
A 2016 Hyundai sedan was heading south on S.C. 23 when the driver lost control and ran off the right side of the road, Ridgeway said. The car smashed into a tree, according to Ridgeway.
The 53-year-old driver, who wore a seat belt, was entrapped in the car and died at the scene, Ridgeway said.
The Edgefield County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.
The passenger, who also wore a seat belt, was taken to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, Ridgeway said. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word on what caused the driver to lose control and veer off the road, but the collision is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Friday afternoon, 951 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, state Department of Public Safety data shows.
At least four people have been killed in Edgefield County crashes in 2021, DPS reported.
