SC teen crashes down embankment into woods off Midlands road, officials say
A South Carolina teenager was killed over the weekend when a Jeep ran off a Midlands road and flipped over into the woods, officials said.
Anthony Milan Tamburini died Saturday, according to Kershaw County Coroner David West. The 18-year-old from Rock Hill died at the scene, West said Sunday night.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2:40 a.m., according to Sgt. Sonny Collins of South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Tamburini was driving west on S.C. 34/Ridgeway Road when the 1999 Jeep ran off the left side of the road and down an embankment, Collins said. That’s in Lugoff, near the junction of U.S. 1 and U.S. 601 and Lugoff-Elgin High School.
The Jeep overturned during the wreck, according to West.
Tamburini was the only person inside the Jeep and wore a seat belt, Collins said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word on what caused the Jeep to veer off the road, but the collision is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Friday afternoon, 966 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, state Department of Public Safety data shows.
At least 18 people have been killed in Kershaw County crashes in 2021, DPS reported.
