Driver killed in crash with truck on interstate, SC Highway Patrol says
One person was killed in an overnight crash on an interstate running through the Midlands, South Carolina Highway Patrol said Monday.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:25 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 20, according to Sgt. Sonny Collins.
The wreck was in the eastbound lanes of I-20, near the 124 mile marker, Collins said. That’s in Lee County, near the junction with U.S. 401.
A 2011 Volkswagen was heading east and collided with a 2019 GMC pickup truck going in the same direction when the car tried to pass, according to Collins.
The Volkswagen flipped over into the median, while the GMC crashed into the median’s cable barrier, Collins said.
The Volkswagen driver, who wore a seat belt, was killed in the wreck, according to Collins.
The Lee County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.
The pickup truck driver also wore a seat belt and was not hurt, Collins said.
No other injuries were reported in the collision that is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
Through Friday afternoon, 966 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, state Department of Public Safety data shows.
At least five people have been killed in Lee County crashes in 2021, DPS reported.
