SC driver killed in crash with tractor trailer, Highway Patrol says

One person was killed Tuesday when a minivan crashed into a tractor trailer, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 4 p.m. on a section of S.C. 28 running through McCormick County, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway. That’s in the Clark’s Hill area, near the Savannah River and the South Carolina-Georgia state line.

Both a 2018 Freightliner truck hauling a trailer and a 2012 Dodge minivan were heading north on S.C. 28, Ridgeway said. The 18-wheeler was making a left turn when it was hit from behind by the minivan, according to Ridgeway.

The driver of the minivan, who wore a seat belt, was entrapped in the vehicle, Ridgeway said. The 46-year-old from North Augusta died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

The McCormick County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the crash victim after notifying the next of kin.

The Lincolnton, Georgia, resident who was driving the truck was also wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, Ridgeway said.

No other injuries were reported.

The collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Tuesday afternoon, 999 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, state Department of Public Safety data shows.

At least three people have been killed in McCormick County crashes in 2021, DPS reported.
