Traffic heading to Columbia backed up for miles in one of of many crashes on rainy day

Drivers making the Wednesday morning commute on a major highway heading to Columbia were stuck in a miles-long traffic jam following a crash. It was one of multiple collisions reported on interstates and secondary roads running through the Midlands.

An eastbound lane on Interstate 20 was blocked following the collision that happened at about 7:30 a.m., according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The wreck was near Exit 61 in Lexington County, which is the junction with U.S. 378. It’s a about a mile from the Richland County line.

No injuries were reported by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Vehicles were backed up for at least five miles on I-20, traffic cameras showed.

Information on what caused the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.

It had rained on and off for hours overnight and into the morning in the Columbia area, but there was no indication weather conditions played a role in the collision.

There was no word when I-20 would be cleared and all lanes of traffic would be reopened.

Other wrecks were reported on I-20, in addition to crashes on Interstate 26 and Interstate 77, according to SCDOT.
