One dead in wrong-way collision on I-26 in Newberry County, SC

A woman is dead after a wrong-way collision Thursday night in Newberry County.

The crash occurred just after 9 p.m. on Interstate 26 West, about 3 miles south of Pomaria, South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Joe Hovis said.

An 84-year-old man from Newberry operating a 2018 Hyundai was driving east in the westbound lane when he struck a 2008 Honda head-on, Hovis said.

It’s not immediately clear why the man was traveling the wrong direction.

The elderly driver and his female passenger both were taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital with injuries. The passenger, who had to be extracted from the vehicle, died at the hospital, Hovis said.

The Newberry County coroner identified the victim as Phyllis Green, of Newberry.

The Honda’s 17-year-old driver also was hospitalized with injuries, but the severity of their injuries were not immediately available.
