Richland County man hit by two vehicles and killed while pushing moped ID’d by coroner
A pedestrian pushing a moped on a Richland County road was hit by two vehicles and killed, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Timothy T. Wright, a 47-year-old Irmo resident died, the Richland County Coroner’s Office said in a Tuesday news release.
The collision involving three vehicles happened at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, according to Master Trooper David Jones.
Wright was pushing a disabled 2019 moped south on Kennerly Road, Jones said. That’s in Irmo, not far from Broad River Road and Exit 101 on Interstate 26.
Near the intersection with Owens Lowman Road, Wright was hit by a 2011 Kia Sorento heading in the same direction, according to Jones. The force of the impact threw Wright into oncoming traffic, where there was a second collision with a northbound 2020 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, Jones said.
Wright died at the scene, according to Jones.
Both the driver of the Kia SUV and the Toyota pickup truck wore seat belts and were not hurt, according to Jones.
No other injuries were reported.
The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 1,068 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, including 173 pedestrians, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
At least 63 people have been killed in Richland County crashes in 2021, and 15 were pedestrians, according to the DPS.
