A South Carolina man who died a day after a crash on a Midlands road was publicly identified by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

Tony Benenhaley, a 30-year-old Sumter resident, died Friday at Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, according to Coroner Robbie Baker.

At about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Benenhaley was involved in a two-vehicle collision, which Baker called an accident.

The wreck happened in the 200 block of Broad Street, according to Baker. That’s in downtown Sumter, about half a mile from the hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

The coroner’s office said an autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Information on if Benenhaley wore a seat belt was not available.

There was no word about what caused the crash, but it continues to be investigated by the Sumter Police Department and the coroner’s office.

Through Friday morning, 12 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

Last year, 1,097 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS data shows.

At least two people have been killed in Sumter County crashes in 2022, while 27 died last year, according to DPS.
