Pedestrian dies after being hit by pickup truck on SC road, Highway Patrol says

A person who was hit by a pickup truck on a Midlands road overnight has died, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Monday.

The collision happened on S.C. 6, near McCords Ferry Road, according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye. That’s in Orangeburg County, near Lake Marion.

At about 9:11 p.m., a person walking west on S.C. 6 was hit and killed by a 1999 Toyota pickup truck driving in the same direction, Pye said.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the pedestrian after notifying the next of kin.

Neither the truck driver nor a passenger were hurt, Pye said. No other injuries were reported.

Information on what led to the collision was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Monday morning, 43 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, including four pedestrians, state Department of Public Safety data shows. One death was in Orangeburg County, where 45 people were killed in crashes last year, according to the DPS. Six of them were pedestrians.

In 2021, 183 pedestrians were among the 1,121 people who had died on South Carolina roads, DPS said.
