Midlands woman dies in hospital hours after car crash, SC coroner says

A Midlands woman was killed in a crash involving a car and an SUV, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office said Saturday.

Kathleen Jackson died in the crash that happened at about 3:55 p.m. Friday, Coroner Robbie Baker said. The 66-year-old Sumter resident was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey where she died later Friday, according to Baker.

Jackson was involved in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Dorsey Drive and St. Paul Church Road, said Master Trooper David Jones of South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in the Cherryvale area near Shaw Air Force Base, about 2 miles from U.S. 378/Broad Street.

Jackson was driving a 2004 Honda Civic east on Dorsey Drive, when she made a left turn onto St. Paul Church Road, according to Jones.

As she turned, Jackson’s car was hit on the driver’s side by a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe that was driving south on St. Paul Church Road, Jones said.

The woman driving the Chevy SUV was not hurt, according to Jones.

No other injuries were reported.

Information on if either of the drivers involved wore seat belts was not available.

An autopsy is scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and the crash continues to be investigated by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

Through Friday afternoon, 50 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, state Department of Public Safety data shows. Last year, 1,121 people died in crashes in South Carolina, according to DPS.

At least three people have been killed in Sumter County crashes in 2022, while 27 died last year, according to DPS.
