Passenger killed when pickup truck crashes into trees, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed Sunday night when a pickup truck crashed into several trees, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 6:15 p.m. on S.C. 430 in Edgefield County, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

A 2000 GMC was driving west on S.C. 430. Near the intersection with Country Place Road, the pickup truck ran off the right side of the road and hit multiple trees, Bolt said.

A passenger in the pickup died at the scene, according to Bolt.

The Edgefield County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the passenger after notifying the next of kin.

The driver, a 21-year-old Edgefield resident, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital, Bolt said.

No other injuries were reported by Highway Patrol.

There was no word if any of the occupants in the collision wore seat belts.

Information about what caused the pickup truck to veer off the road was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Friday morning, 81 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, state Department of Public Safety data shows. Last year, 1,122 people died in crashes in South Carolina, according to DPS.

At least three people have died in Edgefield County crashes in 2022, while four died last year, according to DPS.
