Pickup truck driver killed crashing into tree near Midlands road, SC cops say
One person was killed Monday when a truck crashed into a tree near a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9 a.m. near the intersection of Riley and Sabby roads, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell. That’s in Calhoun County, in the area between Interstate 26 and U.S. 601.
A 2019 Dodge Ram was driving east on Riley Road when it crossed the center line, according to Tidwell. The pickup truck then continued to run off the left side of the road and crashed into a tree, Tidwell said.
The driver died, according to Tidwell. There was no word if the driver died at the scene, or was taken to an area hospital.
The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.
Tidwell said the driver was the only occupant and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver wore a seat belt.
Information about what caused the truck to veer off the road was not available.
Through Friday, 121 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,149 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
This is the first deadly crash reported in Calhoun County in 2022, while nine people died in collisions there last year, according to DPS.
