Driver dies after running into semi-truck on Richland County interstate

A driver died after running into the back of a semi-truck early Saturday, the highway patrol reported.

At about 12:30 a.m., the driver of an SUV was traveling west on Interstate 26 when the semi-truck in front of him began to slow for traffic, South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper David Jones said. The SUV driver did not slow in time and ran into the back of the semi-truck.

The highway patrol is still investigating the wreck, Jones said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office may publicly identify the victim after the next-of-kind is informed.

At least 197 people have died this year in wrecks in South Carolina this year, including 12 in Richland County, according to the department of public safety.
