Driver killed crashing SUV into fence post, South Carolina Highway Patrol says

One person was killed when an SUV crashed into a fence post, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9 a.m. Friday in Barnwell County, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.

A 2008 Honda Element was driving east on Cemetery Road, near the intersection with S.C. 37, when it ran off the left side of the road and hit the fence, Tidwell said.

The driver, who was the only person in the compact SUV, was taken to an area hospital and later died, according to Tidwell.

The Barnwell County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver wore a seat belt.

Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

Through Thursday, 226 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,192 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least two people have been killed in Barnwell County crashes in 2022, according to DPS. There were eight deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
