Second injury wreck on I-77 in NE Columbia closes ramp near hazardous material spill

A wreck on Saturday near the location of an earlier collision and hazardous material spill on Interstate 77 in northeast Columbia has the road clogged and an exit ramp closed.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported at least one person was injured in the latest wreck.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation reported that the wreck happened at about 1 p.m. on I-77 north near exit 19, which closed the exit ramp for Farrow Road.

The latest wreck occurred about eight hours after an SUV going the wrong way in the northbound lane in the same area hit a semi-truck and sedan, causing the semi to light on fire and spill hazardous material, according to authorities. The SUV driver died and the two other drivers were hospitalized.

The first wreck caused lanes to be closed for hours, including a right lane clean- up that lasted from the morning to the afternoon.

Crews appeared to still be cleaning up the hazardous material at about 1:30 p.m., according to the DOT’s real-time traffic maps.

Traffic cameras show traffic crawling on I-77 north near exit 19.
