20-year-old killed, passengers hurt when car flips over in crash, SC officials say
One person was killed and three others were injured in an early morning crash, South Carolina officials said Saturday.
Taylor M. Ross was the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet who died in the crash, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said. The 20-year-old Martinez, Georgia, resident died at the scene from blunt force injuries, according to Ables.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 7 a.m. on the westbound side of Interstate 20, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye of South Carolina Highway Patrol. The wreck was near the 28 mile marker on I 20, which is not far from the Lexington County line.
Ross was driving west when the Chevy sedan ran off the right side of the road, according to Pye. Ross over-corrected and the car veered across the lanes and off the left side of I-20, where it flipped over, Ables said.
Ross was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to Ables.
Three passengers in the Chevy were taken to an area hospital, according to Pye. Further information on their conditions was not made available.
It was not immediately known if any of the passengers involved in the wreck wore a seat belt.
Information about why the Chevy originally veered off the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol. Toxicology testing are pending, Ables said.
Through Thursday, 310 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,192 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
