One killed, more hurt when car hits truck hauling boat on Midlands road, SC cops say

One person was killed and two others were injured Saturday when a car crashed into a pickup truck hauling a pontoon boat, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 4 p.m. in Orangeburg County, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.

A GMC Sierra pickup was driving north on U.S. 15/Bass Drive near Mims Lake Road, Tidwell said. That’s in the Holly Hill area, about 7 miles from the junction of Interstate 26 and Interstate 95.

A Honda Accord was driving in the opposite direction and crashed into the pickup when the car made a left turn, according to Tidwell.

There were three people in the Honda, and one of the passengers was killed, Tidwell said. There was no word if the passenger died at the scene or was taken to an area hospital.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the passenger who was killed after notifying the next of kin.

The two other occupants of the Honda were hospitalized, according to Tidwell. Further information on their conditions was not available.

The GMC driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

Information on if any of the people involved in the wreck wore seat belts was not available.

There was no word if there would be any criminal charges, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Thursday, 330 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,192 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least nine people have been killed in Orangeburg County crashes in 2022, according to DPS. There were 45 deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
