2-year-old killed in crash on Midlands road, SC coroner says

A 2-year-old Midlands boy was killed Sunday when he was hit by a car, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office said.

The accident happened at about 9:20 p.m., according to Coroner Robbie Baker.

The toddler was a pedestrian who traveled into Deacon Lane, near the intersection with W. Patricia Drive, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in Sumter, in the area between Pocalla Road and Manning Road.

A 2013 Cadillac XTS was driving south on Deacon Lane when it hit the child, according to Tidwell.

The young boy from Sumter was taken to the emergency room at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital where he died, Baker said.

An autopsy will be performed at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The driver was the only person in the Cadillac and was not hurt, according to Tidwell. No other injuries were reported.

Information about how the child got into the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the Highway Patrol.

Through Monday, 384 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022 — and 57 were pedestrians — according to the state Department of Public Safety. In 2021, 193 pedestrians were among the 1,194 people who died on South Carolina roads, DPS said.

At least 13 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2022, and this is the first involving a pedestrian, DPS reported. Last year, 31 deaths were reported there, and five involved a pedestrian, according to DPS data.
