Passenger dies after falling out of pickup truck into ditch, SC Highway Patrol says
A person died Sunday, the day after falling out of the back of a moving pickup truck, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The single-vehicle collision happened late Saturday night on a section of U.S. 378 running through McCormick County, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt. That’s not far from the Savannah River and the South Carolina-Georgia state line.
There were four people in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado that was driving west on U.S. 378, Bolt said.
At about 11 p.m., near the intersection with Christian Road, one of two people in the cargo area in the back of the pickup fell out and hit a ditch, according to Bolt.
The passenger was taken to an area hospital and later died, Bolt said.
The McCormick County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the victim after notifying the next of kin.
Neither the driver nor the front seat passenger nor the other person in the pickup’s cargo area were hurt, according to Bolt.
Information about how the passenger fell from the pickup was not available, but the death continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
