Lexington County man killed in crash between pickup and tractor trailer named by coroner

One person died after a pickup truck hit a tractor-trailer head on in Lexington County, according to a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper.

Bobby Joe Price died at an area hospital, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said. The 64-year-old Leesville resident was a passenger in the pickup, according to Fisher.

The wreck happened about 11 a.m. Friday on U.S. 378 near Lake Village Drive, Master Trooper David Jones said. That is close to Lake Murray in a rural area of the county.

The driver of the pickup truck crossed the center line and went into the oncoming lane and hit the semi, Jones said. The pickup truck driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

Price was not wearing a seat belt, Fisher said. There was no word if the driver wore a seat belt.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, according to Fisher.

Information about why the pickup veered into oncoming traffic was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Monday, 428 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 15 people have been killed in Lexington County crashes in 2022, according to DPS. There were 57 deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
