SC woman killed when SUV runs off road and hits multiple objects, officials say

A South Carolina woman was killed Monday when the SUV she was driving ran off a road and hit multiple objects, officials said.

Sandra L. Robinson was the driver who died, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said. The 56-year-old Aiken resident suffered blunt force injuries and died at the scene, according to Ables.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 12:40 p.m. on Edgefield Highway, near Morris Pond Road, said Lance Cpl. Tyler of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in Aiken, near Exit 18 on Interstate 20.

Robinson was driving a 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander north on Edgefield Highway when the vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, according to Tidwell. The SUV then hit a street sign before crashing into a tree, Tidwell said.

Robinson was wearing a seat belt, according to Ables.

Tidwell said Robinson was the only person in the SUV, and no other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash is being investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. Toxicology tests are pending, Ables said.

Through Sunday, 437 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least nine people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 36 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
