Driver killed in crash with tractor trailer on I-20 identified by coroner
One person was killed Wednesday when a car crashed into a tractor trailer on a section of a major interstate running through the Midlands, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Roger Reed, a 49-year-old from Kingstree, died in the accident, said Kershaw County Coroner David West.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 7:30 p.m. near the 105 mile marker on Interstate 20, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt. That’s in Kershaw County, not far from Camden.
Both a 2015 Freightliner tractor trailer and a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Reed, were going east on I-20, when the car crashed into the rear of the 18-wheeler, Bolt said.
Reed died at the scene according to Bolt. Reed was not wearing a seat belt, West said.
Bolt said the South Carolina man driving the tractor trailer was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the Chevy to hit the back of the tractor trailer was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Tuesday, 515 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
At least nine people have been killed in Kershaw County crashes in 2022, according to DPS. There were 24 deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
