Crash at Malfunction Junction blocks highway running through Columbia

Multiple lanes on a highway running through Columbia were blocked following a crash that caused delays for drivers in the area called Malfunction Junction.

A tractor trailer overturned and a wrecker was brought in to clear the scene, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

All of the westbound lanes on Interstate 20 were closed following a collision that happened at about 12:45 p.m. near Exit 64, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s in Richland County, only a few miles from the Lexington County line, and is also the junction with Interstate 26.

In addition to the lanes on I-20, the ramp for Exit 107A on I-26 was also closed after the wreck, which caused a traffic jam on that highway as well, SCDOT said.

As of 3 p.m., the lanes were still blocked.

No injuries were reported in the collision, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information on the number of vehicles involved was not available.

Vehicles were backed up for at least three miles on I-20, traffic cameras showed.

There was no word on how long it would take to reopen the lanes and clear the scene, or if it will have any affect on the evening commute. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible, or expect delays.
