10 people hurt and road closed after Comet bus crashes in Columbia, officials say

Multiple people were hurt and a busy road was blocked after a Comet bus crashed Monday morning, the Columbia Fire Department said.

At about 9 a.m., emergency responders were told about a vehicle accident involving a Comet bus, the fire department said.

The single-vehicle collision happened on Colonial Drive at the intersection with Surrey Street, according to the fire department. That’s near S.C. 277, in the area between North Main Street and Forest Acres.

When firefighters arrived, they found the bus had run off the road and down an embankment, the fire department said.

Ten people, including the driver, were removed from the Comet bus and taken to an area hospital by Richland County EMS, according to the fire department.

Further information on their conditions was not available.

The area near the intersection of Colonial Drive and Surrey Street was closed as crews and a tow truck worked to pull the bus back onto the road, the fire department said.

There was no word on how long the roads would be closed, and drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.

Information about what caused the crash was not available, but it is being investigated by the Columbia Police Department.
