Motorcycle rider killed in crash that shut down Lexington road for hours, officials say

A man died the day after a motorcycle crash caused an hours-long traffic jam on a busy Lexington road, officials said.

Brandon Michael Noles died from the injuries he sustained in the accident, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Tuesday in a news release.

The 27-year-old Lexington resident was at an area hospital when he died Monday, according to the release.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, the coroner’s office said.

Noles was driving on Augusta Road, and in the 5400 block the motorcycle hit a concrete raised median, according to the release. That’s near Cedarcrest Drive in the area between the Old Mill and Exit 58 on Interstate 20.

Noles, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle, Fisher said.

No other injuries were reported in the crash that caused all lanes of the road to be blocked through 10 a.m., the Lexington Police Department said.

Police continue to investigate the crash.

Through Friday, 570 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, including 78 motorcycle riders, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Helmets were not worn in 46 of the deadly motorcycle wrecks, DPS reported.

In 2021, 159 motorcycle riders were among the 1,194 people who died on South Carolina roads, according to DPS.

At least 22 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2022, and six involved motorcycle riders, DPS reported. Last year, 57 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.

That includes another fatal collision Sunday. At about 4 a.m., a 21-year-old Gilbert resident died at the scene of a crash where he was ejected from a vehicle, according to the coroner’s office. The crash happened at the intersections of U.S. 1/Augusta Highway and Calks Ferry Road, which is about 7 miles from the site of the crash where Noles died.
