Crash causes traffic jam on interstate running through Columbia
Multiple lanes on a highway running through the Midlands were blocked following a crash that caused delays for drivers making the Monday morning commute.
Two southbound lanes on Interstate 77 were closed following a crash that happened at about 8 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation said.
The collision happened a mile north of Exit 2, which is the junction with S.C. 35. That’s in Lexington County, near the Congaree River, about a mile from Columbia and the Richland County line.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety did not have details if there were any injuries caused by the crash.
Information on the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.
Vehicles were backed up for at least a mile, traffic cameras showed.
There was no word on how long it would take to reopen all of the lanes and clear the scene, but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible. If not, they should expect delays.
