Early-morning crash near Malfunction Junction causes injuries, traffic jam
A crash on a major interstate in the area called Malfunction Junction caused injuries and delays for drivers making the Wednesday morning commute toward downtown Columbia.
Two eastbound lanes on Interstate 26 were closed following a crash that happened at about 5:15 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Transportation said.
The collision happened near Exit 106 on I-26, which is the connection with St. Andrews Road, just before the exits connecting with Interstate 20 and Interstate 126. That’s in Lexington County, about a mile from Columbia and the Richland County line.
Injuries were reported in the crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Information about the number of people hurt, and their conditions, was not available.
There was no word on the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved.
Vehicles were backed up for miles, traffic cameras showed.
There was no word on how long it would take to reopen all of the lanes and clear the scene, but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible. If not, they should expect delays.
