Driver dies after crash where car flipped several times by Midlands road, SC cops say

One person was killed in a crash where a car flipped over multiple times by a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened in Orangeburg County at about 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Master Trooper David Jones said.

A 2009 Toyota four-door was driving west on S.C. 6 and ran off the left side of the road near Red Bank Road, according to Jones. The Toyota hit a culvert and overturned several times, Jones said.

The driver was taken to an area hospital and died there, according to Jones.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

No other injuries were reported.

The driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information about why the Toyota veered off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 628 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 20 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 45 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
