SUV crashes down embankment into trees and flips over, killing driver, SC cops say
One person was killed early Monday morning when an SUV ran off a Lexington County road where it crashed into trees and flipped over, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 1:20 a.m. on S.C. 302, near the intersection with Old Orangeburg Road, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell. That’s between Interstate 20 and Interstate 26.
A 2017 Kia Soul was driving east on S.C. 302 when the subcompact SUV ran off the left side of the road, according to Tidwell. The SUV went down an embankment, hit several trees and flipped over, Tidwell said.
The driver, who was the only person in the SUV, died at the scene, according to Tidwell.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.
There was no word if the driver wore a seat belt.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
This was the third fatal collision in Lexington County since Friday night.
A 61-year-old woman was killed and two other people were hospitalized after a head-on collision happened at about 7:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Old Charleston Road, the coroner’s office said.
At about 10:30 p.m. Friday, a 28-year-old man died in a single-vehicle collision in the 100 block of Naomi Drive, according to the coroner’s office.
Through Thursday, 628 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 27 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 57 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
