Person dies in Richland County hospital after crash that hurt 4 others, SC cops say

One person died days after a crash on a Midlands road that left four other people hospitalized, the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle crash happened at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Orangeburg County, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell.

A 2008 Pontiac was driving south on U.S. 301/Five Chop Road and crossed the median near the intersection with 4 Holes Road, Tidwell said.

The vehicle hit a ditch and flipped over, according to Tidwell.

The driver and two passengers were taken to area hospitals, while two other passengers were airlifted to Prisma Health Richland, Tidwell said.

On Saturday, one of the passengers flown to Columbia died at the hospital, according to Tidwell.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the person who died.

Further information on the conditions of the four other occupants was not available.

There was no word if any of the victims wore seat belts.

Information about why the Pontiac veered across the median was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sept. 18, at least 730 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 28 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 45 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.

There was a deadly wreck in Orangeburg last weekend when an ATV crashed and flipped over into a creek, the Highway Patrol said.
