Midlands man found dead after truck crashed into tree is identified by SC coroner

A truck driver was found dead after a pickup ran off a Midlands road and crashed into a tree, South Carolina officials said.

Paul Edward Goldsberry, a 61-year-old Pomaria resident, was the driver who died Sept. 30, Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece said Monday.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11:55 p.m., at the intersection of Holy Trinity Church Road near Red Knoll Road, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in the Pomaria area of Newberry County between Interstate 26 and U.S. 176.

Goldsberry was driving a 2017 Chevrolet west on Red Knoll Road when the pickup ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree, according to Pye.

Goldberry was not wearing a seat belt and an autopsy is scheduled for this week, Kneece said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about what caused the pickup to veer off the road, but the collision continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 766 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least nine people have died in Newberry County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 18 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
