Pedestrian killed in early-morning crash on Richland County road, Highway Patrol says
One person was killed when an SUV hit a pedestrian on a Richland County road early Thursday morning, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened at about 6:15 a.m. on Kelly Mill Road near Stallion Drive, according to Master Trooper Gary Miller. That’s in the Elgin area, near Lake Carolina.
A 2021 Ford Bronco was driving north on Kelly Mill Road when it struck the person who was walking across the road, Miller said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.
Neither the driver nor a passenger in the Bronco were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
More than 766 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, and at least 97 involved a pedestrian, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 49 people have been killed in Richland County crashes in 2022, including 12 pedestrians, according to DPS. There were 73 deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
