Two drivers killed and two passengers injured in crash, SC Highway Patrol says

Two people were killed and two others, including a teenager, were injured when an SUV crashed into a car Wednesday night, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6 p.m. in Chesterfield County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

A 2017 Kia SUV was driving north on Middendorf Road when it ran off the right side of the road, according to Bolt. The SUV then veered left of the center line and hit a southbound 2006 Lexus sedan before going off the road and flipping over, Bolt said.

Both the drivers of the SUV and car died at the scene, according to Bolt.

The Chesterfield County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the drivers killed in the crash.

A 17-year-old passenger in the SUV and a 22-year-old passenger in the car were hurt and had to be airlifted by helicopter to a hospital, Bolt said. Further information on their conditions was not available.

There was no word if any of the people involved in the wreck wore seat belts.

Information about what caused the SUV to originally veer off the road was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 810 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to DPS. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 13 people have died in Chesterfield County crashes in 2022, data shows. Last year, nine deaths were reported there, DPS reported.
