Two motorcycle riders killed in crash with SUV identified by coroner

Two people were killed and another was injured Sunday night when a motorcycle and SUV crashed on a Midlands road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Randy Carter and Tami Brown died in the accident, Kershaw County Coroner David West said Monday.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 7 p.m. on Smyrna Road in the Elgin area of Kershaw County, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

Carter, a 50-year-old from Elgin, was driving a 2000 Harley-Davidson north on Smyrna Road when it hit a 2010 Chevrolet SUV that was backing out of a private driveway, Ridgeway said.

Carter died at the scene and Brown, a 51-year-old Cayce resident who was a passenger on the Harley, was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital where she died on arrival, according to West.

Neither Carter nor Brown wore a helmet, according to West.

The 21-year-old Elgin resident driving the SUV was hurt in the collision and was also taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, Ridgeway said. Further information on the Chevy driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the SUV driver wore a seat belt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Oct. 30, at least 841 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, including 124 motorcycle riders, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 14 people have died in Kershaw County crashes in 2022, and this is the fourth involving a motorcycle, DPS reported. Last year, 24 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.

This was the second fatal motorcycle collision in the Midlands in as many days.

In a Saturday night wreck on S.C. 34 in Lee County, a passenger on a Harley-Davidson was killed and the driver was hospitalized following a hit-and-run collision, according to the Highway Patrol.

“Motorcycles are everywhere but they are small, easily obscured by other vehicles and roadside structures, and sometimes hard to see,” the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office recently said while promoting motorcycle safety. “Automobile drivers should watch closely for motorcycles in all directions at intersections. Avoid turns — especially left-hand turns across oncoming traffic — on yellow lights in case an approaching motorcycle is coming through the intersection.”
