Columbia woman killed in crash identified by Lexington County coroner
A Columbia woman was killed in a car crash Thursday, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
Jennifer Oneal Cassidy, 49, died at an area hospital after the accident, Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Wescott Road and Bush River Road, according to the release. That’s near Saluda Shoals Park, about 1.5 miles from St. Andrews Road, which is located in a part of Columbia that’s in Lexington County.
Cassidy was turning onto Bush River Road when she was struck by a vehicle traveling south on Bush River Road, Fisher said.
Cassidy was wearing a seat belt,according to the release.
The other vehicle’s driver, who was also wearing a seat belt, was not hurt, Fisher said. No other injuries were reported.
It was raining when the collision happened, as Tropical Storm Nicole was moving up the coast toward South Carolina. There is no indication the weather conditions caused the wreck.
Information about what caused the collision was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Ms. Cassidy,” the coroner’s office said.
No funeral arrangements have been made public, according to an obituary.
More than 841 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 35 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 57 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
